This article focuses on how the platform supports AWS tagging functionality.
Note: This article assumes a basic understanding of AWS tagging functionality.
AWS Tag Feature Overview
A tag is a label assigned to a resource within an AWS account. Each tag consists of a key and a value, both of which are defined by customers to make it easier to manage, search for, and filter resources. There are three categories to which tags can be applied: (1) Cost, (2) Security, and (3) performance. Not all resources within the AWS console can be tagged and not all tags capture cost. Cost allocation tags are specific to the type of resource.
The diagram illustrates the concept of tagging. In the diagram, tags are assigned to two EC2 instances, one called Cost Center, and another called Stack. Each of the tags also has an associated value. AWS uses cost allocation tags as a mechanism to organize resource costs in detailed billing reports.
Tags are included in the Detailed Billing Report (DBR) and are associated with usage at a resource level when marked as ‘Active’ in the Cost Allocation Tags page in the AWS Billing Console. Under the shared consolidation model, these tags are activated by TD SYNNEX.
Important Note: When your customer’s account becomes part of your platform, their access to the Cost Allocation Tags menu will no longer be available to them in the AWS console because the customer is no longer directly financially responsible to AWS for the charges in that account.
Only the payer account has access to the Cost Allocation Tags menu option, where tags are listed as activated or not activated. The Cost Allocation Tags menu in the payer account displays a comprehensive list of Tag Keys for resources that have been tagged by child accounts. Tags that are not marked as 'Active' at the payer account level will not be included in billing and usage files. However, it is still possible to list these tags by calling the Describe Tags API at the customer account (this may vary depending on the service). These tags are not typically found in the detailed billing files.
Managing Tags
Note: The Tags table is in the StreamOne Ion management console (reseller view) only; not in the customer portal
Navigation: Account > Settings > Cost Management > Tags
The list of Key Tag names in this table are collected dynamically from platform imports and are specific to AWS. Notice the default in the “Active” column defaults to a status of “Yes.” This does not mean the tag is automatically or currently enabled in the CUR file. The platform Operations team activates all tags within the AWS console.
The following table defines the fields in the Tag table:
Column Name | Description | Purpose or Use Case |
Cloud Provider | Identifies the cloud provider the tag is associated to | This table only captures AWS tags since there is a programmatic method to pull tag information from the AWS master accounts. Other cloud provider tag data displays in reports and dashboards but is not managed in this table |
Name | Tag Key Name setup by a user inside a cloud account | Tracks billing data at the asset level. |
Rename Tag Key | A unique name or alias assigned to a customer tag by reseller | Used to perform billing analysis across multiple customer and cloud accounts. |
Active | Defaults to ‘Yes’ and indicates that the customer tag key has a cost associated with it. | This appears in reports when activated by the master payer and/or when the toggle is marked "Available in Dashboard and Reports." |
The "toggle" shown below can be used to enable Tags so that they appear in the Dashboard and Billing Report. You can rename Tags using the platform management panel as well. The Tag Key names defined by your end customer in the AWS console are unaffected by this feature.
Dashboard Tag Filters
Resellers and End Customers can filter by Tags in the Dashboard. From Dashboard, click Add KPI Card, Daily Cost, select Seller or Customer cost, select Tag, select a cloud vendor, and finally click the drop-down arrow to select the Tag key.
Billing Report Tag Filters
Select the customer billing report you want to view. From the "Options" menu drop-down, you will see "Manage Tag Columns". By selecting this feature, you add the tag to your report option. Then select "Manage Report Columns" to add the tag to your report. You are now ready to export the data (option).
